The Hot Spoon Question

01
Question
A simple everyday question that leads to understanding how heat moves through objects we use all the time.
02
Explanation
When the spoon sits in hot soup, heat moves from the hotter part of the spoon to the cooler handle. Metal allows heat to travel easily, so the warmth spreads through the spoon even though the handle isn’t touching the soup. This process is called heat conduction/transfer.

03
Video
This short video shows how heat moves from the hot soup through the metal spoon toward the cooler handle. By watching the heat travel, you can see why the handle becomes warm even without touching the soup.
